Journobit: Carol Clerk

More sad news via Everett True’s blog: Carol Clerk, news editor at Melody Maker, died earlier today. True’s words, and the warmth of the comments on the piece, say a lot about a woman who was able to keep herself held in high regard despite working at the interfaces of the music and journalism industries.

Video: Jonas Reinhardt - Atomic Bomb Living

If there was ever a Kranky artist who could pull off the "forgotten film footage music video" it would be Jonas Reinhardt. His synth space kraut begs to be matched with some unknown sci-fi B movie, and "Atomic Bomb Living" lives the dream. Something to do with pterodactyl heads, a robot with clawed feet (to help with dancing on the rocks), and clam breasted, island bound sirens worshiping both.

The sky that wraps the world round, past the blue and into the black

If Lindstrom’s ‘Where You Go I Go Too’ was a love letter to Steve Reich written from a Balearic beach circa 1981, Prins Thomas’ forthcoming self-titled album shows the Scandinavian maestro bounding all his warm influences together with muscular motorik lasso. It all sounds like dub edits of Fletwood Mac covering Michael Rother’s secret repertoire […]

Gordon in the morning: Did you know JLS were going to America?

Perhaps Murdoch could save the need to raise paywalls on his sites if he just charged JLS for the acres of unquestioning publicity the band get from Gordon Smart. Or maybe they’re already charging, and not bothering to declare it. There’s another one this morning:
Beautiful Rihanna has confirmed she will record a single with the JLS lads before the end of the year - and she believes BEYONCE and Kanye West will follow.

We Should Nail Their Thoughts To The Wall

Liars “Scarecrows On A Killer Slant”

There are a lot of guitar parts on Liars’ Sisterworld that are genuinely frightening and startling. The band have not reinvented the wheel — their parts lift from horror soundtracks, hardcore punk, art rock — but they’ve mastered the textures and dynamics, resulting in amazingly vivid and visceral music. “Scarecrows On A Killer Slant,” the album’s centerpiece, is bleak and extremely violent.

It doesn't need to be.

There’s rain in the forecast here in Boston, which doesn’t make me want to play the usual TGIF song. (It’s Phil Collins’ “That’s All”, if you must know.)

Times That We Met Before We Met

Spoon “The Mystery Zone”

What is a mystery zone?

1. It’s a liminal state. Neither here nor there, but on the threshold of something new. Everything is uncertain, opportunities abound. It’s exciting and terrifying.

2. It’s the period of time before you really get to know someone, but you’re aware of each other’s existence. You had no idea you’d be significant to one another. It’s back when all there was to it was attraction, curiosity, and possibility.

The long fade-out: Mark Thompson proposes slow, slow death of 6Music

So, it’s official: Mark Thompson is going round to 6Music and the Asian Network and asking them to turn the music off. Not straight away, though:
During the briefing Mr Thompson said the earliest 6 Music and Asian Network would close would be by the end of 2011.

It was reported on Friday that the two digital stations would be closed, after the report was leaked to The Times.
